TOWNSZacharo CHURCH OF SAINT PANTELEIMONAS You might think that the church standing majestically by the side of the main road in Zacharo, is the main church of the town but this honour falls to a church in the Old Town that bears the name of Zacharo's patron, Saint Spyridon. The new church is devoted to Saint Panteleimonas. Originally named Pantaleon ('like a lion'), he was physician to the Roman Emperor Maximiam but changed his name to Panteleimon ('all-merciful') when he converted to Christianity and dedicated his life to the sick. Today, it is the exposed concrete of Panteleimon's church that seems most in need of his healing powers.
