FROM PATRA VIA OLYMPIA Archaelogical Museum of Olympia ANCIENT SITE OF OLYMPIA Olympia is an ancient site on Greece's Peloponnese peninsula that hosted the original Olympic Games. These began in 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from Elis, won the stadion race, a foot race 600 feet long. The site's extensive ruins include athletic training areas, a stadium and over seventy significant buildings including temples dedicated to the gods Hera and Zeus, although this survives only as stones on the ground. The site's ticket also allows entry to three museums one of which, the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, is one of the most important in Greece.
