TOWNSKyparissia KYPARISSIA CASTLE The castle in Kyparissia is built on the top of a precipitous hill overlooking the gulf. Although the actual building is not very big, and most of it is in ruins, the castle grounds offer a 180° view and are a nice place to wander around. There is good car access and the paths are easy. Close-by are tavernas and cafés. Constructed to fit the terrain, the castle dates back to the Byzantine era. In 1205 it was occupied by the Franks. In 1460 it was occupied by the Turks and a square building next to the entrance gate has been identified as a small mosque. In 1970 a small open-air theatre was built that occasionally hosts cultural events.
