VILLAGESSidirokastro SIDIROKATRO CHURCH At an altitude of 450 metres, the monumental twin tower church in Sidirokastro is at the top of a sculpture-lined set of steps, although there are gentler routes. The church seems to embody the strength of the villagers and their fortress which, in 1452 (shortly before the fall of Constantinople), resisted the Turahan Bey who had besieged the old village. Sadly, the Turks returned again in 1460 and this time burned the settlement and the castle to the ground. Like most churches in Greece, the church is usually locked but, if you can find the priest, he is only to happy to show you its splendid interior.
