SIDIROKASTRO
One route from Ancient Phigaleia to the sea involves crossing the Neda river and heading south west through the modern day village of Sidirokastro ('iron castle'). This was rebuilt in 1650 at the foot of a ruined castle and settlement that was burnt to the ground in 1460 by the Turks and later played an important role in pre-revolutionary conflicts and the insurgency of 1821.
Known as the "village of sculptures" because of the abundance of stone and bronze figures created by a local artist, it has a café adjacent to an impressive sculpture-lined set of steps leading to an equally impressive church.
